Chapter Nine

Eventually, after what felt like hours of listening to the males talk, Alison heard Doc leave. Dax carefully lifted her up, his knees and back cracking as he hefted his body off the floor. A pang of guilt shot through her; he must be so sore from holding her for all this time.

Gingerly, Dax placed her on the bed, carefully tugging a blanket across her. She kept her eyes closed and her breathing steady, not wanting him to know she’d been awake for so long. He heaved in a deep breath, and then moved forward in a motion that absolutely shocked her to her very core.

Dax, the flesh and blood robot, with no emotions, no true compassion. The wolf who didn’t like anyone who lived and breathed…bent forward, and gently kissed her forehead. Heat flared where his lips met her skin, and Alison couldn’t help but gasp.

“Be safe, baby girl. I have to leave, but I will never be too far,” he whispered against her mouth, making her heart flutter as his warm breath washed across her lips.

Alison’s eyes shot open as the heat of him left her skin, and as he turned to leave her heart shattered into a million pieces.

Though Maker only knew why, she knew this wolf could never give her what she was beginning to crave.

“Dax,” she whispered, not able to control the fear edging its way to the surface at the thought of him leaving. “Please.”

He spun on his heel so quickly he nearly lost his balance as he turned to face her.

“Alison,.” he grunted, his face twisted in a mixture of warmth and irritation.

“Please, sit with me a little more,” she said softly. For a moment Dax’s face dropped in sheer surprise, then something that looked suspiciously like a smile flitted across his lips. Dax rarely smiled.

As that lopsided grin flashed across his lips, Alison held in a gasp. He looked so handsome, his chiselled face and dusting of stubble, his eyes sparkling in the dim lighting of her room. That male was truly gorgeous, and it was such a great loss to female kind that he would never take a lover, let alone a mate.

“I can’t,” he bit out.

“Why?”

“Because, I have to go.”

“No, you don’t. You could stay with me, if only for a little while.” She smiled as sweetly as she could, hoping like hell he would stay, for her.

“No.” His words cut through her as surely as a knife would, her heart shattering all over again.

“Dax, why won’t you love another?” she asked, as her brother would say to hell with it. She wanted to know, needed to know why he couldn’t be with a female, even if it wasn’t her. But as she said the words, she regretted them instantly. That vague smile, that slight hint of warmth in his expression, abruptly died, his eyes hardened, his face cool and controlled. He became the Dax she’d always known again.

“Because I don’t want to,” he said, his voice carefully even.

“But
